Medium to Dark Blue Dalle de Verre Glass Pony Slabs

These 8" × 8" Dalle de Verre glass slabs have a dramatic, jewel-like presence. The dominant color is a deep cobalt-to-sapphire blue, ranging from intensely luminous electric blue where light passes through the glass to much darker navy and blue-black areas where the slab is viewed in front of darker background images.  One of the example photos is backlit by LED lighting.  Under natural light the glass will need direct sunlight to bring out the deep, rich blue colors.  .

Visual character

The photographs reveal several qualities that make these slabs especially interesting for an artist:

• Rich sapphire/cobalt coloration — The blue becomes exceptionally vibrant when the slab is backlit, almost glowing from within.

• Strong variation in transparency — Some areas transmit brilliant blue light while others become deep, shadowy blue, giving the slab considerable visual depth.

• Organic surface texture — The face contains rippled, irregular and slightly crystalline-looking areas that break up reflected light.

That combination of thickness, color and irregular surface is one of the defining attractions of dalle de verre: faceted or irregular surfaces can redirect light and create jewel-like flashes and changing patterns.

How an artist could use these slabs

Cut them into architectural mosaic elements

An artist could saw the 8" × 8" slabs into geometric or organic shapes and combine the resulting pieces into a larger Dalle de Verre panel. The intense blue would be especially effective for water, sky, shadows, night scenes or abstract compositions.

Create a luminous blue abstract panel

These slabs would be particularly strong in an abstract composition based entirely on shades of blue.

An artist could combine them with:

• clear glass

• pale aqua

• turquoise

• royal blue

• violet

• black or very dark blue

• white or opalescent glass

The darker portions could create visual "depth," while brighter cobalt sections could become focal points.

Water and ocean imagery

5. Freestanding sculptural glass

An artist could mount one on a simple metal, stone or glass stand and allow the 8" × 8" slab to function as a small contemporary sculpture.

Combine several slabs into a larger artwork

Several slabs could be arranged edge-to-edge or separated slightly within a frame to create a large-scale blue glass composition.

The artist could deliberately orient each piece differently so that its internal variations and surface textures respond differently to the light. This would prevent the finished artwork from looking mechanically repetitive.

Their strongest artistic attribute is probably that they don't simply have a blue color—the thickness of the glass makes the blue behave almost like a physical space. That makes these 8" × 8" slabs particularly attractive for contemporary mosaic, architectural glass, wall sculpture, illuminated installations, abstract work and ocean/water-inspired art.

They would also make excellent focal pieces in a larger collection of Dalle de Verre slabs, particularly alongside turquoise, cerulean, clear, violet or amber glass.
