8 × 8-inch Dark Violet Dalle de Verre

These 8 × 8-inch dark violet Dalle de Verre glass slab show a rich, saturated purple character that changes dramatically depending on the lighting.

  • Color: The glass ranges from deep violet, indigo-purple, and blue-violet in reflected light to a more luminous electric violet when strongly backlit. The darker areas have an almost plum or midnight-purple quality.

  • Light transmission: When illuminated from behind, the slab becomes especially striking. Light travels through the glass and reveals layers of color, producing a glowing, jewel-like appearance. This makes it particularly well suited to backlit architectural and sculptural applications.

  • Surface: The face has a subtly irregular, textured appearance typical of cast Dalle de Verre. Fine variations, ripples, and internal texture catch the light and create areas of brighter and darker violet.

  • Internal character: Numerous small bubbles and inclusions are visible throughout the slab. These imperfections give the glass a handmade, organic quality rather than the perfectly uniform appearance of industrial sheet glass.

  • Edges: The edges are thick and rounded, with slight variations from the casting process. When illuminated, the edges can become especially bright, emphasizing the substantial depth of the material.

  • Visual effect: The dark violet base gives artwork a sense of depth, mystery, drama, and intensity. Under strong illumination, it can shift from a quiet dark purple to a brilliant blue-violet glow.

How an artist could use it

This would be an excellent statement color for stained-glass, Dalle de Verre, mosaic, and illuminated sculpture. An artist could:

  • Pair it with clear, lavender, cobalt, turquoise, or pink Dalle de Verre to create dramatic color transitions.

  • Use it as a dark background surrounding brighter glass shapes, allowing illuminated colors to appear to float within the composition.

  • Cut it into geometric or organic pieces for a mosaic or architectural panel.

  • Incorporate it into a backlit wall installation, where LEDs transform the otherwise dark violet glass into a glowing focal point.

  • Use sections of the slab in a sculptural piece where changing the direction or intensity of light produces different shades of purple.

  • Combine it with warm amber or gold glass for a particularly dramatic cool-versus-warm color contrast.

The strongest feature of this particular glass is its dual personality: in ordinary light it reads as a deep, sophisticated violet, while transmitted light reveals a much more vibrant electric blue-violet glow. That transformation could make it especially valuable to an artist designing work around illumination.
