These 8 x 8 -inch bright orange Dalle de Verre glass slabs have an exceptionally vivid, luminous character. The strong backlighting in the photographs reveals just how much depth and variation is contained within the glass.

Visual character

  • Color: A saturated, glowing orange that ranges from tangerine and pumpkin orange to fiery red-orange. In direct sunlight, portions become almost incandescent.

  • Transparency: The tiles are substantially translucent, allowing light to penetrate deeply into the glass. This makes them particularly effective for illuminated artwork, windows, and light-catching installations.

  • Internal movement: Rather than being a perfectly uniform orange, the glass contains wispy, flowing layers of darker and lighter orange, giving it the appearance of suspended liquid or flame.

  • Red accents: Subtle red-orange ribbons and streaks move through the tile, especially toward the edges and upper portions. These provide visual direction and keep the surface from appearing flat.

  • Texture: The kiln-forming process has produced a softly organic surface with faint waves, striations, and variations in thickness. Small air bubbles and inclusions are visible throughout, adding handmade character.

  • Edges: The edges are rounded and softly finished, with thicker-looking perimeter areas that become especially dramatic when illuminated.

  • Light behavior: When held against a window, the orange becomes extraordinarily bright and almost jewel-like. When viewed away from strong backlighting, it becomes a deeper, richer amber-orange.

How an artist might use them

These pony Dalles would be excellent focal elements in a larger glass composition because their intensity naturally attracts the eye.

Abstract flame or fire compositions
The flowing red-orange lines could become the basis for an abstract representation of flames, molten glass, lava, or a glowing horizon. Several slabs could be arranged so their internal patterns appear to flow from one into the next.

Sun and sunset imagery
The luminous orange would work beautifully for a stylized sun, sunset, desert landscape, or autumn scene. Combining the slabs with yellow, amber, red, and clear glass could create a remarkably deep sunset palette.

Botanical and floral artwork
Individual pieces could be cut into petals, leaves, or abstract organic forms. Orange paired with bright green glass would create a particularly energetic flower or botanical mosaic.

Contemporary mosaic panels
Because they are 8 × 8 inches, they can function as substantial architectural elements rather than merely small mosaic pieces. An artist could arrange whole slabs in a grid and introduce occasional cut or rotated pieces to create a modern geometric composition.

Backlit wall sculpture
This may be one of their strongest applications. Mounted in front of LEDs or natural daylight, the transparency allows the orange glass to become the light source visually, rather than simply a colored surface. Multiple slabs could form a glowing wall panel or sculptural screen.

Contrast with cool colors
Pairing these orange slabs with cobalt, cerulean, turquoise, or dark sea-green glass would produce dramatic complementary-color contrast. The cool blues and greens would make the orange appear even hotter and more luminous.

Particularly interesting artistic quality

What makes these slabs especially useful is that the color isn't simply painted onto the surface. The orange appears to occupy the depth of the glass. As light travels through the glass, the internal wisps, bubbles, thickness variations, and red passages become part of the artwork.

For an artist working with your collection of kiln-formed and Dalle de Verre pieces, I would consider these high-impact “warm light” slabs—excellent for creating the visual center of a composition and especially powerful when contrasted against your blues, greens, turquoise, and clear glass.
