6 x 6 x 1/2 Inch Tile - Medium Turquoise on Clear

These tiles have a rich, luminous turquoise character, shifting between deep blue-green, aqua, and teal depending on the lighting. Their strongest feature is their ability to transform dramatically when illuminated from behind.

Color & appearance

Dominant color: A saturated turquoise/teal with a distinctly blue-green character.

Light transmission: The tiles are highly translucent. In sunlight, the turquoise becomes exceptionally bright and almost electric aqua, while against a darker background it reads as a deeper, more sophisticated teal.

Layered depth: There are visible variations in density throughout the glass, creating areas of darker turquoise alongside lighter, glowing passages.

Organic movement: Subtle wisps, cloudy areas, and flowing internal variations give the surface a sense of movement rather than a completely uniform color.

Bubbles and inclusions: Numerous small bubbles are suspended within the glass. These become particularly attractive when backlit, appearing almost like tiny beads or points of light.

Surface: The kiln-formed surface has gentle irregularities and a softly textured appearance, characteristic of handmade glass.

Edges: The rounded edges catch and concentrate light, producing a darker turquoise perimeter and giving the tiles a substantial, jewel-like presence.

The second photograph particularly demonstrates the spectacular difference between ordinary illumination and strong backlighting. With sunlight passing through them, the tiles become much brighter and more cyan, revealing internal details that are less obvious under reflected light.

How an artist might use them

Water and ocean imagery
These are ideal for depicting ocean water, waves, tropical lagoons, waterfalls, or underwater scenes. The varying turquoise densities can suggest depth, while the bubbles can become visual references to underwater movement.

Tropical and aquatic mosaics
An artist could combine whole tiles with smaller cut pieces to create coral reefs, tropical fish, sea turtles, or abstract marine compositions. Pairing turquoise with cobalt, cerulean, dark blue, and clear glass would produce tremendous depth.

Botanical artwork
Turquoise can provide an unexpected contemporary interpretation of foliage. Combined with bright greens, emeralds, and yellows, these tiles could become leaves, tropical plants, or abstract botanical forms.

Backlit architectural art
This is one of their strongest applications. Installed in a window, lightbox, or illuminated wall panel, the glass can become almost glowing cyan. An artist could arrange several 6 × 6 tiles into a larger illuminated composition.

Contemporary abstract panels
Because each tile is a substantial 6-inch square, it can serve as an individual color field. Several could be arranged in a grid, rotated, separated by clear glass, or combined with differently colored kiln-formed pieces to create a modern abstract installation.

Strong contrast with warm colors
These turquoise tiles would be particularly dramatic beside bright orange tiles. Orange and turquoise create a powerful complementary contrast: the orange brings warmth and energy while the turquoise provides coolness and depth.

Artistic potential

What makes these pieces especially interesting is their dual personality. Under ordinary lighting they have the appearance of substantial blue-green glass, but when sunlight passes through them, they become luminous fields of turquoise with bubbles, wisps, and internal textures floating throughout.

For a larger body of kiln-formed work, I would consider these “water/light” tiles—excellent for introducing cool color, transparency, depth, and illumination into a composition. They could serve equally well as architectural glass elements, mosaic components, or individual focal pieces in a sculptural installation.
