This 6" × 6" kiln formed glass tile has a very deep, atmospheric cobalt blue with subtle violet undertones, giving it a rich, almost nocturnal presence.

Visual Characteristics

  • Color: Saturated cobalt blue with hints of indigo and violet, especially where the glass thickens at the edges.

  • Transparency: Semi-transparent. Strong backlighting reveals depth and internal movement, while under normal room light it appears more opaque and mysterious.

  • Surface: Smooth and glossy with softly rounded corners and edges from the fusing process.

  • Internal Patterns: Gentle wisps and flowing striations create a sense of movement beneath the surface, reminiscent of:

    • deep ocean water,

    • twilight clouds,

    • polished gemstones,

    • or ink dispersing through water.

  • Light Interaction: When placed in a window, the tile glows intensely, transforming sunlight into saturated blue illumination. The edges become especially luminous.

Artistic Qualities

This tile has a contemplative, minimalist feel. Unlike highly patterned art glass, its beauty comes from subtle variation and depth. It invites viewers to look into it rather than merely at it.

How an Artist Might Use It

Stained Glass and Window Installations

The tile could become a focal element in:

  • Contemporary stained-glass panels

  • Architectural window inserts

  • Sun-catching installations

  • Door sidelights or transom windows

Its deep blue would contrast beautifully with clear, white, or pale aqua glass.

Wall Art

Artists could arrange multiple tiles into:

  • Abstract color-field compositions

  • Ocean-inspired wall pieces

  • Gradient installations moving from pale aqua to deep cobalt

  • Geometric mosaics

A series of these tiles would create dramatic shifts in color as daylight changes.

Sculptural Work

Because of its thickness and visual weight, the tile could be:

  • Mounted on edge in a steel stand

  • Combined with other fused glass panels

  • Incorporated into illuminated sculptures

LED backlighting would dramatically reveal the interior depth and is desperately recommended with this tile..

Water and Sky Themes

The coloration naturally suggests:

  • Deep water

  • Evening skies

  • Storm fronts

  • Celestial imagery

  • Moonlit landscapes

An artist could use several tiles together to build a narrative progression from shallow turquoise waters into dark ocean depths.

Mixed-Media Installations

The tile would pair well with:

  • Patinated steel

  • Driftwood

  • Polished stone

  • Concrete

  • Brushed aluminum

The cool blue tones create a striking contrast against warm organic materials.

Gallery Description

"Hand-fused art glass tile, 6 × 6 inches. Layers of cobalt and indigo glass merge into a luminous field of deep blue. Subtle internal currents and softly rounded edges capture and transform light, shifting from near-opacity to radiant translucence as illumination changes throughout the day. Suitable as a standalone art object or as a component in architectural, sculptural, or mosaic installations."
