6" × 6" × ½" Pressed Kiln-Formed Glass Tile
This substantial 6-inch square, ½-inch-thick pressed kiln-formed glass tile has a dramatic, highly tactile character. It appears to combine intensely colored blue glass with a pressed botanical or organic relief, creating the impression of leaves, foliage, and flowing natural forms captured within the glass.
Color and visual character
-
Dominated by rich cobalt, royal blue, and electric sapphire blue.
-
Brilliant cyan and turquoise-blue highlights emerge where strong light passes through thinner or more transparent areas.
-
Deeper areas shift toward midnight blue, indigo, and blue-black, giving the tile considerable depth.
-
Some sections have a cool smoky blue-gray appearance, particularly where the glass is thicker or more densely textured.
-
Clearer areas allow light to penetrate deeply, producing luminous blue edges and glowing internal highlights.
-
Under backlighting, the blues become exceptionally vibrant, while reflected light emphasizes the darker, almost metallic-looking relief.
Pressed surface and texture
The most distinctive feature is the deeply dimensional pressed pattern. Raised and recessed botanical forms create a network of leaves, stems, ribs, and organic shapes across the surface. The leaf-like forms have pronounced linear ribbing, while other areas contain rounded or petal-like impressions.
Because the relief is incorporated into the glass rather than simply printed onto its surface, light catches the ridges and depressions from constantly changing angles. This gives the tile an almost sculptural, underwater quality.
The glass also contains numerous small bubbles and natural kiln-formed variations, adding to its handmade character. These imperfections become particularly beautiful when illuminated.
Artistic potential
At ½ inch thick, this is more than a conventional flat mosaic tile—it has the presence of a small glass relief sculpture. An artist could use it as:
-
A dramatic centerpiece in a mosaic or architectural glass panel
-
A focal element in a blue-and-turquoise ocean or underwater composition
-
A botanical component in a glass garden or foliage-themed artwork
-
A dimensional accent surrounded by flatter glass tiles
-
A standalone illuminated wall piece where backlighting can activate the cobalt and cyan colors
-
Part of a larger installation combining several pressed tiles with different botanical patterns
The combination of deep cobalt blues, brilliant electric-blue illumination, turquoise flashes, and strongly embossed organic texture makes this tile especially effective as a focal point. It has the visual feeling of water, foliage, and light simultaneously captured in thick translucent glass.
